Wicked the Play
By Randy Smith
Most of us over 40 people have seen the wizard of oz quite a few times. In fact I still have that back ground music playing in my head while I am writing this article. I remember feeling sorry for Dorothy and Toto as that terrible twister came down on them. Well that is the beginning of how Dorothy ended up in OZ but it’s not the beginning of the play Wicked. In fact far from it. The play begins through the eyes of the wicked witch. Was she really wicked or just a product of the events that impacted her life? The play has a fascinating story line that will forever change how you see and remember the wizard of OZ. Act 1 begins with a song “ No one mourns the wicked” song by Galinda with a Ga and the citizens of OZ. This song provides the frame work for the rest of the play. It’s a celebration of the wicked witch of the west being (Elphaba) killed by Dorothy. The time line quickly shifts to the beginning when Elphaba’s was born and why she was born green. Who really was her father? See the play. The play quickly moves from there to when she went to college with her sister where she meets Galinda with a Ga for the first time. As fate will have it Galinda and Elphaba become roommates where a friendship bond begins. Elphaba has a hard time fitting with the student at the college in part by the color of her skin. No one had ever seen a person with green shin before. But, one of the teachers quickly realizes Elphaba has a gift and promise her to meet the wizard some day. Elphaba becomes trouble in college because of the mistreatment of animals taking place at the school. She finally gets her wish to meet the wizard, hoping he can put a stop to this cruelty. Elaphaba and Galinda are surprise by Galinda’s boy friend showing up at the train station. At this point there seems to be feeling between Elphaba and Galinda’s boy friend. Galinda heads to the Emeral city with Elphaba but in protest of the miss treatment of animals she changes her name to Glinda before they arrive at the Emerald city. Glinda is fascinated by this new beautiful city and wants Elphaba to conform to their way of thinking. Well Elphaba is saddened by the fact that she finds out who is behind the plot to mistreat the animals. She sets out on her own direction to protect and free the animals. She steals the book of secrets and spells and goes into hiding as dangerous criminal. Act 2 Act 2 brings everything together. If I told you about it would ruin the book or the play. I recommend you go to the play and be forever changed on the story of the Wizard of OZ |
